Seattle SuperSonics

The SuperSonics played in Seattle from its expansion year of 1967 until 2008. That summer, the City of Seattle reached a settlement in its lawsuit and federal court case with Sonics owners. The settlement allowed then-Sonics owner and Oklahoma-based Clay Bennett to move the Sonics to Oklahoma City. Bennett had bought the team in 2006 from then-Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. The relocation is considered one of the most messy sports relocations in history.

The city of Seattle kept the team name, colors, logos, and trademarks in case the NBA returns to the Pacific Northwest.

24/7 Strike

From the day the doors opened in 1957, this landmark alley was a gathering place for families, friends and bowling leagues. With their Sundowner Lounge, fully equipped arcade and Pro Shop, not to mention their theme nights and party packages, Sunset Bowl offered their customers every conceivable opportunity to have a great time. After several major upgrades and the decision to go 24/7 a few years back, their lanes frequently topped the highest in the nation! Despite a citywide outcry and some seriously passionate pleas from fans, the beloved bowling alley closed up shop on April 13, 2008. Oh how it is missed! Celebrate the memories with Sunset Bowl Stickers.

One of the last classic piano bars

Opened in 1978 and closed in 2003 to rising rents, upscale development, loss of parking and aging clientele. Some described Sorry Charlie’s like something out of a David Lynch movie, with a wide range of characters who came for pot roast, strong drinks, and crooned everything from “Danny Boy” to “Send In the Clowns.” The patrons were a mix of blue-hairs, street folks, Seattle Opera singers, blue collars, and in its later years, hipsters, and casts of Teatro Zinzani. Sometimes the spotlight included kazoos, trumpet players, and a guy who played two violins at once.

Seattle’s Home of the Blues!

We wanted to capture the flavor of southern juke joints when we did the interior of the club. To this end we used Birney Imes’ book, “Juke Joints” which has photos of these classic bars. The interior of Highway 99 Blues Club includes a 34-foot bar made from five antique second hand doors, reclaimed blue velvet benches from the old Masonic Temple, natural/recovered wood art installations and a gallery of paintings and photographs by local artists.

Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened!

Seattle’s Oldest Bar

The J&M Cafe and Cardroom got its name from partners Jamieson and McFarland, who opened for business in Pioneer Square in 1892. It served as a gambling and dancing establishment for the men of the Gold Rush. Its ceiling is pressed tin, rumored to have been installed by Italian craftsmen. The bar-back is made of Austrian mahogany — transported around the Cape in the late 1890s. In 1974 The J&M served as the backdrop for a scene in the John Wayne movie, ‘McQ’.

Lost to history in 2019 but remembered always.

Celebrate Your Vices

Lovejoys Taproom & Brewery in downtown Austin, Texas isn’t what you’d expect in a brewpub. This Lone Star institution not only features over one hundred beers and a rotating selection of five home brews, it straddles the line between biker bar, live music venue and social club for Austin’s no-frill locals. The juke-box has its own fan club and the coffin and manhole cover make for nice tables. Lovejoys is THE place in Austin to celebrate your vices in style. Lovejoys closed in 2012.

Ghosts of Grunge’s Past

The Off Ramp Cafe music venue was at the heart of the grunge explosion in the ’90s that changed Seattle and music forever; Pearl Jam’s first five shows were in this room. Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Mudhoney all cut their teeth here. Nirvana even debuted an early version of Aneurysm here in 1990, before it was changed for its official release the next year. The Off Ramp closed in 1999. The venue is still there and still doing shows. It has gone through several name changes and owners over the years. It is now operating under the name El Corazon.

Giving Alternative a New Definition

One of the longest-running alternative clubs in Seattle. The 2018 1st Ave location was originally a hotel, then brothel, built at the turn of the century. The Vogue was a small, dark club seminal in what would become the “grunge” scene plus many others, from garage to reggae to the 1st Acid House party on West Coast. Bruce Pavitt, co-owner of Sub Pop, worked there. Well-known co-manager Monny Rybick was a former sailor who wore a leather skirt & would direct newcomers to other venues if he felt The Vogue wasn’t right for them.

Nirvana played their 1st show here in ‘88, opening for Blood Circus. Mudhoney’s 1st show was here too, opening for Das Damen from New York City. Other bands who’ve played here include Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Primus, Tad, Treepeople. Mother Love Bone, Zipgun (Cajun Metal), NOFX, Wayne/Jayne County & countless more.

The Birthplace of Grunge!

Located at the western edge of Seattle’s Chinatown-International District at 410 Fifth Avenue South, this venue uniquely featured two different rooms for bands to play in: Gorilla Gardens and the Omni Room. The venue’s official name was Rock Theater.

Green River, often called the first true “Grunge” band, got their start there, along with mainstays like Sonic Youth, the Butthole Surfers, Soundgarden, Hüsker Dü, and the Violent Femmes. Sadly, the club never capitalized off of the sound it pioneered. When fire marshals shut down a Circle Jerks show in 1985, it started a riot, and the doors never opened again.

Thanks for the Music and Memories!
