Opened in 1978 and closed in 2003 to rising rents, upscale development, loss of parking and aging clientele. Some described Sorry Charlie’s like something out of a David Lynch movie, with a wide range of characters who came for pot roast, strong drinks, and crooned everything from “Danny Boy” to “Send In the Clowns.” The patrons were a mix of blue-hairs, street folks, Seattle Opera singers, blue collars, and in its later years, hipsters, and casts of Teatro Zinzani. Sometimes the spotlight included kazoos, trumpet players, and a guy who played two violins at once.

A Fremont institution since 1988. The Red Door managed to move (the building) down the street, open a full-bar, patio and kid-friendly dining area and not lose the appeal and charm of the cozy, old alehouse by the bridge. Great, local microbrews on tap and stellar pub food prevail here, but don’t miss the beer-steamed clams and fresh salads. It’s happy hour from 3-7pm daily, and the kitchen’s open ’til midnight for a late night bite. The Red Door closed in 2020.

Ah, where to begin on this greatly-missed, legendary ‘90s Belltown joint on 4th Ave. It was a laundromat/music club/art gallery/bar/café/diner – where folks could wash their dirty draws, see a punk show, play arcade and board games, and eat a big ass slice of $2 pizza – often all at once. The Sit & Spin embodied the spirit of so many old “only in Seattle” establishments, and was a favorite hangout for neighborhood locals, musicians, artists, students, street folks, whoever. So many great bands played small shows here, like Mudhoney, The White Stripes, Critters Buggin, The Posies, and Modest Mouse, to name a few.

This dark, lively establishment is as authentic a Brit pub as you’re likely to find this side of the Atlantic. In Seattle, you’ll be hard-pressed to find another packed bar on a weekend morning, complete with rowdy drinkers and a full English Brecky on their plates. Football is always on the telly, and live games draw big, excitable crowds. Gone the way of drive-in movie theaters and back-roads diners, Seattle’s bowling alleys have been steadily going dark for the past decade as real estate prices sky rocket and entertainment options abound. After 44 years in business, this beloved Hawaiian-themed bowling alley closed its 36 lane operation and ended an era of family fun and friendly league competition.

In the 60s, family restaurants attracted throngs of happy diners with a newfangled idea: give it a theme! After hauling their antique Wurlitzer organ from a NYC theater in the late 70s, the family run and operated Pizza & Pipes of Bellevue was born. From kiddie birthday parties to corporate Boeing events and everything in between, customers loved a little Bach with their pepperoni. As cheaper and faster took over as the modern themes, this beloved establishment was forced to close its doors after almost 20 years. Guess you can’t have your slice for a dollar and your entertainment too!
