Opened in 1978 and closed in 2003 to rising rents, upscale development, loss of parking and aging clientele. Some described Sorry Charlie’s like something out of a David Lynch movie, with a wide range of characters who came for pot roast, strong drinks, and crooned everything from “Danny Boy” to “Send In the Clowns.” The patrons were a mix of blue-hairs, street folks, Seattle Opera singers, blue collars, and in its later years, hipsters, and casts of Teatro Zinzani. Sometimes the spotlight included kazoos, trumpet players, and a guy who played two violins at once.

Lovejoys Taproom & Brewery in downtown Austin, Texas isn’t what you’d expect in a brewpub. This Lone Star institution not only features over one hundred beers and a rotating selection of five home brews, it straddles the line between biker bar, live music venue and social club for Austin’s no-frill locals. The juke-box has its own fan club and the coffin and manhole cover make for nice tables. Lovejoys is THE place in Austin to celebrate your vices in style. Lovejoys closed in 2012.

The Off Ramp Cafe music venue was at the heart of the grunge explosion in the ’90s that changed Seattle and music forever; Pearl Jam’s first five shows were in this room. Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Mudhoney all cut their teeth here. Nirvana even debuted an early version of Aneurysm here in 1990, before it was changed for its official release the next year. The Off Ramp closed in 1999. The venue is still there and still doing shows. It has gone through several name changes and owners over the years. It is now operating under the name El Corazon.

One of the longest-running alternative clubs in Seattle. The 2018 1st Ave location was originally a hotel, then brothel, built at the turn of the century. The Vogue was a small, dark club seminal in what would become the “grunge” scene plus many others, from garage to reggae to the 1st Acid House party on West Coast. Bruce Pavitt, co-owner of Sub Pop, worked there. Well-known co-manager Monny Rybick was a former sailor who wore a leather skirt & would direct newcomers to other venues if he felt The Vogue wasn’t right for them.

Nirvana played their 1st show here in ‘88, opening for Blood Circus. Mudhoney’s 1st show was here too, opening for Das Damen from New York City. Other bands who’ve played here include Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Primus, Tad, Treepeople. Mother Love Bone, Zipgun (Cajun Metal), NOFX, Wayne/Jayne County & countless more.

A Fremont institution since 1988. The Red Door managed to move (the building) down the street, open a full-bar, patio and kid-friendly dining area and not lose the appeal and charm of the cozy, old alehouse by the bridge. Great, local microbrews on tap and stellar pub food prevail here, but don’t miss the beer-steamed clams and fresh salads. It’s happy hour from 3-7pm daily, and the kitchen’s open ’til midnight for a late night bite. The Red Door closed in 2020.

Ah, where to begin on this greatly-missed, legendary ‘90s Belltown joint on 4th Ave. It was a laundromat/music club/art gallery/bar/café/diner – where folks could wash their dirty draws, see a punk show, play arcade and board games, and eat a big ass slice of $2 pizza – often all at once. The Sit & Spin embodied the spirit of so many old “only in Seattle” establishments, and was a favorite hangout for neighborhood locals, musicians, artists, students, street folks, whoever. So many great bands played small shows here, like Mudhoney, The White Stripes, Critters Buggin, The Posies, and Modest Mouse, to name a few.

The loyal patrons of Fremont’s ”Fabulous Buckaroo” a neighborhood tavern, in the truest sense of the word, would argue its merits, over endless rounds of brew, until dawn if you chose to provoke the discussion. Bikers, neighbors, “young punks” and your average Joes all swill beers and shoot pool together every night of the week. Large wooden booths, with eons worth of etched-in graffiti, surround the pool tables and weathered pinball machines, making it the ideal place to get up in everyone else’s business. Seattleites feel lucky that a place like the Buckaroo was still buckin’ after almost 70 years.

Previously housed in what are now high-rise Belltown condos, the back-up-and-running Cyclops didn’t forfeit its sassy charm and loyal following when it went homeless for a spell. In fact, the owners of this hip, landmark café and bar managed to bring back the charm and regulars in spades when they reopened in their landmark new space on First Ave. Funky private booths and vintage tables line the room, and the bar fills up with the post-work crowd every night of the week.
